How TLC Care Selects and Trains Professional Caregivers

When you invite a caregiver into your home, you're trusting them with your family's safety, dignity, and daily life. That's not a decision we take lightly — and it shouldn't be one you take lightly either. Here's exactly what happens before a TLC Care caregiver is ever matched with a family, from application to their first day on the job.

It starts with a careful application review

Not every applicant moves forward. We look for more than just experience — genuine warmth, patience, and a natural instinct for care are things no resume can fully capture, so early conversations focus as much on character as on qualifications.

Background verification, before anything else

Every caregiver undergoes identity verification and background screening before they're considered further. We also check professional references directly, speaking with past employers or clients wherever possible. This step alone rules out a number of applicants — and it isn't negotiable.

Interview and practical skills assessment

Shortlisted candidates go through a structured interview along with a hands-on skills assessment — not just a conversation. Depending on the role, this can include mobility assistance techniques, basic first aid, hygiene and personal care practices, and how they'd handle common real-world situations, like a fall or an anxious, confused client. We're also listening for communication style, patience under pressure, and genuine empathy.

Paid, structured training before the first assignment

Passing the interview isn't the finish line — it's the start of training. Every caregiver completes a paid, structured training programme before being assigned to a family, covering personal care techniques, safe mobility and transfers, medication reminders, emergency response, and communicating with families who may be managing care from a different city or country. Caregivers supporting specialised needs — post-surgery recovery, disability care, or memory-related conditions — receive additional condition-specific training.

Matching caregivers to families, not just filling a shift

A trained caregiver isn't automatically the right caregiver for every family. Before care begins, we consider personality, language, daily routines, and the specific needs of the person receiving care, so the caregiver assigned to your family is a genuine fit — not simply whoever happens to be available.

Supervision doesn't stop once care begins

Placement isn't the end of our involvement. A dedicated care coordinator checks in regularly, families receive updates on how care is going, and our team monitors quality throughout the engagement — not only at the start. If something isn't working, we adjust, including reassigning a caregiver if a family's needs change or the fit isn't right.

Ongoing learning, not a one-time course

Caregiving needs evolve, and so does our training. Caregivers continue building their skills over time through refresher sessions and additional condition-specific modules, so their knowledge stays current as they take on new families and new kinds of care.

Why this process matters for your family

This may feel like a lot of steps for what looks, from the outside, like "just" hiring a caregiver. But dependable home care is built on trust — and trust isn't something we ask families to take on faith. It's something we build into every stage of how a caregiver joins our team, long before they ever meet your loved one.

If you're exploring care options and want to understand more about who would actually be caring for your family member, a free consultation with a TLC Care coordinator is a good place to start.
